A loving safety reminder…

At our Council meeting last night, we talked through some of our regular topics of discussion which include safety.

Our school staff is noticing that increasing numbers of

parents are providing sleds for children to use on the icy hill adjacent to our parking lot and other areas around the school.

I understand that when children are under the care of their parents you make choices that work for your family. It does become a concern for us when students are experiencing near-misses or injuries due to these decisions, especially when it is adjacent to our supervision times at entry and dismissal. It also creates confusing messages for our students when one group of adults(ie. School staff)are requesting one type of behavior parents/guardians are allowing otherwise. Here are some specific observations noticed at entry and dismissal times in recent days:

• Collisions between “sliders” and walkers
• Kids on sleds sliding under the fence and into the pick-up area of the compound
• Kids injuring themselves on the ice

We request that parents/guardians refrain from allowing sledding in these high-traffic zones until the area around the school has been cleared of high traffic. Please be considerate of others and use common safety sense when accessing the environment around the school.
