Estimadas familias,

Welcome, Back! ¡Nuestro trabajo con Yellowsteps Learning ya empezó!

Welcome back to school! We are now heading into a very busy stretch of learning and opportunities for our students. Spanish Immersion weeks begin once again on Monday April 8, until Thursday April 18. Teachers will increase the use of Spanish oral language throughout the day. Students may not notice a huge difference as using the language to support routine transitions and learning tasks is embedded in our Spanish bilingual program. While we are mandated to use the language 50% of the day, we will intentionally sneak in even more opportunities to increase exposure and practice within the context of our classrooms and school environment!

A reminder that all students will engage in 2 walking trips over the next two weeks. Teachers have already reached out to their families to request volunteer support for these excursions (1 hour each). Thank you for your help! As well, students across grades 1-5 will be taking part in swimming lessons this month. We will be very busy indeed!

Just before Spring Break started for our Eugene Coste students, teachers engaged in deep thinking and planning as we prepared for next steps in learning. Thanks to funding from our Eugene Coste Enrichment Society, our place-based learning academic residency with Yellowsteps Learning and Jenn Doeve has begun!

Part of this residency revolves around activating our Learning Common’s space. Today, Jenn hosted each grade group for an introductory conversation about our time together. The Learning Commons will continue to be our “headquarters” and studio where classes will be invited to share and document their exploration within a 1km radius around the school.

Here are some interesting ideas and questions that were posed to students today:

  • “Every explorer needs to ask themselves: “¿Dónde estamos? Where are we?
  • “We all belong in this story of Haysboro. We spend a lot of time here. You are actually part of this community, even if you do not live here.”
  • “If we were to lift up the school, what would we find underneath?”
  • “If the city was not here, the buildings were not here, how would you know where you are?”
  • “Kids have the best eyes, ears, noses and feet for walking.”

Our goal is to deeply explore the community surrounding our school. This will develop students’ abilities as observers and critical thinkers from a historical and geographical lens. We are excited to see what is generated and share that with you!

SNOW MUCH FUN!
