¡Felíz año nuevo! Happy New Year!
We have enjoyed a great first week of 2025 back to school with our staff and students.
We are pleased to welcome a new Education Assistant to our team, Sra. Do Vy Nguyen, who joins our current Education Assistants Sra. Monica Ovalle and Sra. Angie Reid. Sra. Nguyen has been getting to know students and teachers in kindergarten and grade 3. We are pleased to see that our budgetary planning for this year has left us enough funding to directly support students in classrooms.
Mandatory Provincial Literacy and Numeracy Assessments
Starting next week, and for a period of nearly 3 weeks, our K-3 teachers will be completing mandatory literacy and numeracy screeners for all students across those grade levels. These assessments are mandated by Alberta Education to be administered across the province. The first round of this testing occurred in September for grades 1-3 only. A third round of testing will take place in May, only for students who have been identified through testing as needing additional support.
Alberta Education (mandatory) assessments include:
▪ Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) Digits test (K)
▪ Phonological Awareness Screening Test (PAST) (K)
▪ Letter Name and Sound Test (LeNS) (K-2)
▪ Castles and Coltheart Reading Test 3 (CC3) (1-3)
▪ Provincial Numeracy Screening Assessments (K-3)
It is important to know that these assessments do not inform report card grades for your students and also do not align perfectly with curriculum expectations for each grade level. Rather, they help teachers to see what areas of learning may require further instruction or intervention support. Data gathered from these assessments guide us in our instructional planning and goal setting for ongoing improvement.
Earlier this year, our school received additional funding to allow for us to book release time so that teachers had coverage in their classes in order to administer the screeners. This support for our teachers will continue during the January assessment period.
