Classroom and School Organization: 2025-2026 School Year
Planning and organization for next year has been a priority for our team at Escuela Eugene Coste since early spring. The first sign that families may notice of this work is when we ask for you to confirm your intent to return for the next school year. This information is critical for us to plan for classes that are equitable, balanced for needs and responsive to relationships.
Many families are curious about who will be teaching what grade and who their child’s teacher might be. For our families, teacher placement information is provided at the end of August through an introductory phone call. At this time, staffing across the Calgary Board of Education remains dynamic as changes to enrollment and opportunities for professional growth impact staffing at all of our CBE schools. Escuela Eugene Coste is not immune to change as we have seen valued staff take up new opportunities and have welcomed new faces each year. Change is good! It invites opportunities for new ideas and perspectives to flow and challenges each teacher to reflect on and adapt their practices.
For next year, we are expecting enrollment growth that is uneven. We have a large number of new students joining us in the early years, particularly in grade 1. As a Spanish Bilingual program of choice, our ability to accept new enrollment past grade 1 is limited due to the demands of our language program. Student enrollment beyond grade 1 must take into consideration Spanish language ability. This means that some of our classes in the higher grades have numbers that require us to plan differently. For example, to reduce class sizes, our team agrees that combining grades 4 and 5 into multi-age classes will improve equity for those students. Our school provided multi-age learning for several years across grades 2/3 and 4/5 to improve class sizes in the past, so this approach is known to our teaching team.
Kindergarten: 2 classes M/W, 1 class T/Th
Grade 1: 4 classes (increase by 1 class)
Grade 2: 3 classes
Grade 3: 3 classes
Grades 4/5: 5 classes
Additional Programming: Music Specialist/Learning Support Teacher
3 Education Assistants
Campus Calgary/Open Minds 2025-2026 Placements for Eugene Coste!
We are thrilled that our entire grade 4/5 team has won placements at Campus Calgary/Open Minds for week-long place-based learning residencies at a variety of locations such as Jube School, Arts Commons and 2School (Education Centre). These are competitive applications, so this is quite an accomplishment! We have an additional placement awarded for a grade 1 class, which is 6 placements in total!
Sensory Room Update
Our May 30 professional learning afternoon was focused on how to incorporate our soon-to-be completed Sensory room to our Eugene Coste continuum of student supports. Our learning was led by a system Inclusive Education Learning Leader and a system Occupational Therapist who covered the purpose and protocols for using the space.
Who can benefit from this room?
- A child who needs a quiet place to decompress
- A child who needs a proactive break to help keep their battery charged charged throughout the day
- A child who is starting to become escalated in the classroom and need different strategies to redirect back to calm
We have begun to receive materials that students will be able to access when they are in the sensory room. We have selected a range of tactile (touch), visual (see) and loco-motor (movement) items that a range of students can be drawn to such as:
