Estimadas familias,

School Improvement Results Report 2023-2024

Each fall schools are tasked with reviewing data on student achievement as well as perception data from students, staff and families about overall quality of education. We summarize these results in an annual School Improvement Results Report (SIRR). This year’s report is available for viewing on our website: https://eugenecoste.cbe.ab.ca/school

Some key highlights from our report include:

  • Students who require extra support in reading and mathematics (as identified by Provincial screeners) respond positively to targeted intervention practices within the classroom or with additional 1:1 or small group staff support
  • Overall achievement of Eugene Coste students is strong: 27% - 39% of students achieve level 3 or 4 across all grades in reading and number concepts
  • Students report teachers want them to be successful (100% agreement)
  • Students report that they identify personal struggles with their own self-regulation/ managing their emotions and also notice that others do not follow the rules
  • Students report weakening confidence in themselves as learners, despite strong achievement (many schools are reporting similarly)

A careful analysis of this data allows us to plan for continuous improvement. This continuous improvement cycle is documented in our School Development Plan.

School Development Plan (SDP) 2024-2025

We are pleased to let you know that year 1 of 3 of our annual SDP is also available for viewing on our website: https://eugenecoste.cbe.ab.ca/school

Like all schools within the Calgary Board of Education, our SDP outlines specific outcomes, actions and professional development resources that support an overarching goal. This goal is directly tied to the CBE Three Year Education Plan. This year, overall school goal and outcomes are as follows:

Nov 22 Pic

To achieve this goal and learning outcomes, we will focus our instructional actions in the following ways:

Learning Excellence Actions

  • Use high impact bilingual writing strategies to engage students’ planning, idea development and organization (NLA literacy loops and writing process)
  • Use high impact mathematics strategies to engage students’ participation in ‘Charlas Numéricas’/Math Talks to share mathematical thinking with clarity

Well-Being Actions

  • Design differentiated tasks that engage and motivate all students (multiple entry points; low floor-high ceiling)
  • Create spaces that provide learners with a flexible and focused learning environment

Truth & Reconciliation, Diversity and Inclusion Actions

Bilingual language strategies to make complex topics understandable to all learners

Reduce barriers for learning through differentiation (direct connection to Well-Being!)

Design tasks that activate spirit, heart, body and mind

Teaching and support staff continuously reflect on our professional practices to ensure that we are creating the necessary conditions for safe, caring and welcoming spaces. This contributes to overall social-emotional well-being and academic success. Families are important partners in this work and we will continue to engage with you about strategies that best support your child(ren’s) learning progress.

Impact of Volunteerism

Thank you to all parents who provide support as volunteers. Your efforts in the school, on field trips or at home make a huge difference in terms of what we can offer students.

Many initiatives and events would not be possible without the support of volunteers. You are needed in order to continue providing:  Family-friendly, community building events (Welcome Back Picnic, Year-End Fiesta, Family Dance, decorating for special events

  • Hot Lunch (organization and distribution day of)
  • Fundraising intiatives (Hot Lunch, Casino, Purdy’s etc)
  • Memory Book
  • Supervision support on field trips (these will be cancelled if we do not meet adult:child ratios)

Fundraising directly impacts student experiences and increases the purchasing power of our school. The publicly funded school budget is limited in scope and priortizes staffing and foundational resources. Fundraising provides us with enrichment dollars that allow us to enhance programming without additional fees to families:

  • Artist/Athletic Residencies
  • Furniture modernization (our Learning Commons!)
  • Learning supports for students (flexible seating options, fidget tools, digital learning subscriptions, PE equipment, Music supplies, high quality Art supplies)
  • Special improvement projects (our playground/sports court, and now, our Courtyard)

As we look towards next year and beyond, many of our key roles within School Council and Enrichment Society will require replacement as families “age out” of our school. In particular we are seeking individuals who are interested in participating/sharing leadership with:

  • Casino (our biggest fundraiser – over $60,000.00 every 2 years)
  • Memory Book
  • Hot Lunch coordination
  • Future Council and Enrichment Society members

If you require support with volunteer process, please contact our office or check out our website at: https://eugenecoste.cbe.ab.ca/volunteer You can also email our School Council /EnrichmentTeams if you are interested in supporting these intiatives. ecsschoolcouncil@gmail.com

For school-based volunteering (field trips, classroom helper), please contact your child’s teacher directly.
