Weekly News, October 13 - 22

Today certainly looked like a very cozy day at Escuela Eugene Coste. Día de Pyjama was a hit! I loved seeing the cute pajama sets and stuffies arriving at school this morning. For the record, if you happened to see me today, my sweats and flannel shirt are indeed Sra. Riquelme’s version of pajamas! Comfort wins today! We are grateful to our EC School Council for encouraging the creation of “Spirit Days”. These are meant to bolster our sense of community and provide some opportunities for fun.

School Council did request feedback from the parent community about our “Spirit Days” in order to ensure that these experiences are equitable and accessible to all families. Thank you for sharing your ideas. These will be incorporated into future planning.

Speaking of fun days, we are counting down to Halloween at Escuela Eugene Coste! It is worth noting that wearing costumes at school for Halloween is not necessarily implemented across all schools within the CBE and is an intentional choice that we have made as a community. There are some parameters that we adhere to in order to ensure that this continues to be a day focused on learning, with some fun built in. To help you with planning, please consider the following:

Costumes are appropriate for a school setting

  • No masks please.  We do need to see students' faces to ensure that we can communicate clearly with one another
  • Face paint is ok!
  • Please avoid anything too scary or gruesome as we do have a young population and not everyone is ready for spooky costumes.
  • Leave pretend weapons at home.
  • Costumes can be worn, comfortably for the day (can your child sit, move, stand and play in their costume?)

Treats and snacks

  • We know that many of our students will engage in trick or treating or that special items might be provided from home in lunch kits or later that evening. Please do not bring additional treats to school for Halloween.
  • Be reasonable about how many candies/treats are included in lunch kits

Activities

  • Teachers will provide a variety of learning activities that are fun and related to Halloween on this day, in addition to regular planned, classroom tasks.  Many classes spend time looking at spooky vocabulary in Spanish related to common Halloween themes, creative writing or art.
  • Our school will be holding an assembly in the afternoon to sing and dance to Halloween-themed songs, view a presentation about Halloween (Trick or Treating) safety and to celebrate the creativity of each class’ costumes.

We thank you for considering our messaging about this event. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

SCHOOL SPIRIT DAYS!

Our School Council has invited students and staff of Escuela Eugene Coste to participate in monthly Spirit Days to further build community within our building. These are intended to be fun and hopefully fuss-free days that everyone can identify with. Our first day was a hit!

Our next Dia del Espiritu Escolar will be focused on wearing our school colours or Eugene Coste branded t-shirts or hoodies. Stay tuned for a date in November!

School Council would love your ideas and feedback to plan our school spirit days for the school year. Take 2 minutes to help us plan engaging spirit days for Escuela Eugene Coste students! Thank you to all the parents that have already responded!
