Setting Students Up For Success- Assemblies

This week students enjoyed their very first assembly as a school community for the 2023-2024 school year. At Escuela Eugene Coste we have developed a routine of using the first assembly as an opportunity to learn about what is expected at assemblies. We feel this is important because many of our youngest learners have not had the opportunity to be present in a large audience and may not know what to expect. We also know that some students might struggle with loud noises and large groups of people.

What are some of our assembly expectations?

-       Classes enter and leave the gym quietly

-       Students show expected listening behaviour (looking towards the sharing space, hands to themselves, listening with ears/no talking)

-       We clap with our hands rather than shouting

-       Assemblies have a plan (Acknowledge the Land, O’Canada, Planned Sharing, School Song, Adios)

We shared these expectations as an easy to follow PowerPoint with photos of examples and non-examples of successful assembly and transition behaviour.

By walking students through what they might expect from an assembly and describing the assembly as a routine, we can ensure greater calm and success from all students in what can be a challenging environment.

Volunteer Orientation

Wow! We had a great showing of support for volunteerism at Escuela Eugene Coste today! Thank you to all of the parents that were able to take the time out of their schedules to join us in the Learning Commons for a presentation about volunteer opportunities at our school. A copy of our presentation is included with this newsletter if you were unable to join us. There are many ways that you can support students at Escuela Eugene Coste:

  • Classroom helper (at the direction of the teacher)
  • Hot Lunch Program
  • Special Council-led Events (family dance, end of year celebration)
  • Field Trips

If you are interested in volunteering, you do require a valid security clearance (Vulnerable Sector Check) from the Calgary Police Service. More can be found by reviewing our website:

Tennis Residency (Sept 18-28)

Our fall residency with Coach Willie is back! Thank you to our Eugene Coste Enrichment Society for once again funding this valuable experience for our students in order to reduce costs for all of our families. This is an opportunity for teachers to learn best practices for teaching raquet sports in developmentally appropriate ways. Students build confidence as they reinforce and develop new skills. Active living takes many forms and we are committed to bringing a range of experiences to our students.
