Estimadas familias,
We are now more than halfway through October and our first Spirit Day of the school year (Halloween) is fast approaching. The weather has noticeably shifted this week, and we are seeing a return to more seasonally appropriate temperatures. With the mornings getting chillier, please ensure that your child is coming to school dressed for the weather. Teachers continue to take students outside for recess and structured learning opportunities with temperatures as low as -20 (with the wind chill). Having a backup pair of mitts or an extra layer under the jacket can make all the difference. Check out some of our photos below to see the many ways that teacher take student learning outside!
Reminder – Halloween
There are some parameters that we adhere to in order to ensure that this continues to be a day focused on learning, with some fun built in. To help you with planning, please consider the following:
Costumes are appropriate for a school setting
No masks please. We do need to see students’ faces to ensure that we can communicate clearly with one another.
Face paint is ok!
Please avoid anything too scary or gruesome as we do have a young population and not everyone is ready for spooky costumes.
Leave pretend weapons at home.
Costumes can be worn comfortably for the day (can your child sit, move, stand and play in their costume?)
Treats and snacks
We know that many of our students will engage in trick or treating or that special items might be provided from home in lunch kits or later that evening. Please do not bring additional treats to school for Halloween.
Be reasonable about how many candies/treats are included in lunch kits in the days following Halloween. This is a great opportunity to model balanced nutrition.
Activities
Teachers will provide a variety of learning activities that are fun and related to Halloween on this day, in addition to regular planned, classroom tasks. Many classes spend time looking at spooky vocabulary in Spanish related to common Halloween themes, creative writing or art.
Our school will be holding an assembly in the afternoon to sing and dance to Halloween-themed songs, view a presentation about Halloween (Trick or Treating) safety and to celebrate the creativity of each class’ costumes.
We thank you for considering our messaging about this event. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.
School Council and Enrichment Society AGM
In a review of the AGM financials at last night’s meeting, we were reminded of the fundraising power of our volunteers and the generosity of our Council and Enrichment Society. We are eternally grateful for all the support they have provided and we look forward to many future events together!
Volunteering at Escuela Eugene Coste
ECS School Council, ECS Enrichment Society, and school administration are interested in your experiences volunteering with our school and opportunities to volunteer this school year. We'd love to hear from you! Please take 3-5 minutes to share your feedback with us:

AMA Safety Patrollers
Starting Monday morning (October 21) you will notice a new presence at our eastern crosswalk at 96 ave and Hillgrove Cres. This program came to our school as a result of the amazing work that our grade 4s did with their Ever Active Residency last year.
What to expect:
o From 8:50am-9:05am and then again at 3:40pm-3:55pm, teams of 3/4 patrollers from grade 5 will station themselves on either side of the crosswalk. They will have high visibility vests, stop signs, and a whistle.
o When a pedestrian approaches the crosswalk, patrollers will check for vehicles, ensure traffic has stopped safely, allow pedestrians to cross, and then allow traffic to resume.
o This is new for us and we are learning! Please be patient if it takes a bit longer to get through this intersection than usual.
