Weekly Update, Sept 5 - 10, 2023
Estimadas familias,
Thank you families and students for helping to make our first two days such a success! It seemed like each entry point of our building was absolutely surrounded by families and students, eagerly anticipating their connection with a new classroom community. We hope that information that was sent home about first day procedures helped to smooth out any questions or wonders that you may have had. Given the very calm and organized morning, I think so! Feedback is always welcome so if you think there is anything else we can do to make our experiences together better, please do let us know.
Thank you as well to members of our School Council and Enrichment Society for providing coffee and treats for our informal meet and greet. It was lovely to say “hello” to everyone who was able to stop by and to promote active participation in our parent- led organizations.
Once students entered the building, it quickly settled into “business as usual”. Teachers designed opening day activities that supported relationship building, establishing classroom routines and familiarizing students with the layout of their classroom and the rest of the school. Our youngest learners, in particular, benefitted from walks around the school and special visits to our office in order to meet all of the adults who are here to support them. Assistant Principal Jackie and I spent the entire lunch period observing and providing additional supervision support during lunch recess. It is important to us that students feel successful and safe throughout the school day and we also love the extra connection time!
I imagine that many students arrived home tired and energized by the excitement of a new school year. We will work to ensure ongoing success as the year progresses.

A note about our staff parking lot
We kindly ask that families refrain from parking or walking through our staff parking lot. There are many safe and available routes to access the school grounds. The parking lot contains obvious and sometimes less visible hazards and therefore has not been designated an official transit space for students and families.
Thank you for parking and walking elsewhere to access our building safely.

My Child Takes the Bus
Thank you for working with your child to remember expected bus behaviour in order to support a safe ride home (stay in your assigned seat, stay seated at all times, appropriate volume of voice, be kind).
As we have done in previous years, if your child normally takes the bus home but you will be picking them up, please meet us at the bus zone so that we can check in with you to confirm attendance. If you are picking up early or if there is a regular pick-up schedule at the bus, please call our office before 2:30pm so that we can add that information to our bus lists and avoid after school confusion.
Everactive Schools – Residency
Eugene Coste is undertaking several initiatives this year to enhance learning, including a special residency with Everactive Schools. We were invited to participate in this residency thanks in part to ongoing dialogue between Escuela Eugene Coste, the Haysboro Community Association and CBE Transportation. Traffic and parking pressures have created less desirable impact for many neighbours of our school. While working to address the root cause of these issues, we can also examine how students travel to school.
This residency will engage our entire school community in thinking about how we safely and actively transport ourselves to the school. To get started, the Everactive team would like to send out an initial Baseline Family Travel Survey to our school community as this feedback is important in student action planning. More will be shared once things get rolling and your intial feedback is a key data source to initiate learning/planning in the classroom.
Here is your survey link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/eugenecoste
We have also attached the School Travel Planning Introduction for Parents information page that helps to inform everyone of the project and consider ways to support it.
Tennis Residency (Sept 18-28)
Our fall residency with Coach Willie is back! Thank you to our Eugene Coste Enrichment Society for once again funding this valuable experience for our students in order to reduce costs for all of our families. This is an opportunity for teachers to learn best practices for teaching raquet sports in developmentally appropriate ways. Students build confidence as they reinforce and develop new skills. Active living takes many forms and we are committed to bringing a range of experiences to our students

SCHOOL SPIRIT DAYS!
Our School Council has invited students and staff of Escuela Eugene Coste to participate in monthly Spirit Days to further build community within our building. These are intended to be fun and hopefully fuss-free days that everyone can identify with. Our first day is a personal favourite- I can’t wait to show up in my favourite colour… Can anyone guess what it is?
