Queridas familias,
As we approach the final weeks of the school year, I want to share several important updates with our families. Report Cards will be available on June 26, and we encourage all parents to review them together with their child to celebrate growth and set goals for next year.
We are pleased to inform you that our school has been allocated ONE additional teaching position(s) for the 2026–27 school year through the Government of Alberta’s Class Size Reduction Grant. This grant funds teaching positions that support improved learning conditions in kindergarten to Grade 9 classrooms.
This funding is specifically intended to help reduce class sizes in core subject areas (English Language Arts/French Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies), with priority given to schools experiencing the greatest class size pressures.
This decision was made using system-wide data that considers:
- The number of classes exceeding provincial class size benchmarks
- Projected enrolment and class organization
- School programming and grade configuration
Our goal is to ensure students benefit from:
- Increased teacher attention
- Improved classroom learning environments
- Greater support for diverse learning needs
We remain committed to supporting strong learning environments for all students and using our resources thoughtfully and strategically.
If your child requires transportation next fall, please ensure you complete your bussing registration before the June 14 deadline, as late submissions may result in delays or unavailable routes.
Our lost and found collection has grown considerably, and we kindly ask families to remind students to check for missing items. Unclaimed belongings will be donated at the end of the month.
We also want to highlight a growing concern around safety during dismissal. U‑turns, parking near crosswalks, and jaywalking create unsafe conditions for our students. Please help us model safe behaviour for all children by following posted signs and using designated drop‑off areas.
A heartfelt thank‑you goes out to Srta. Micah for her leadership in organizing our Grade 5 graduation, as well as to our dedicated parent volunteers. We look forward to celebrating this milestone with our students and their families. We also extend our appreciation to the Weaselhead/Glenmore Park Preservation Society for their flexibility in offering their program on‑site at the school, ensuring student safety given the lack of shelter at the park during potential thunderstorms.
Finally, a gentle reminder that we do not accept class placement requests. Our teachers and staff work thoughtfully and collaboratively to create balanced class cohorts that support the success and well‑being of all learners.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support in making this a wonderful school year.
Warmly,
Carmen

Yes! We’re having a Book Fair!
Dear families,
We’re excited to announce that our first Owl’s Nest Book Fair is coming! You can shop for hundreds of items during our Spring Fiesta. Looking for something to read during summer break? Our Fair can help! It will be open on June 18th, from 3:30 to 7:30 pm. Remember that all purchases help us earn new resources for our school. Students will have the opportunity to preview items with their classrooms earlier in the week and bring a wish-list home.
Important: In case you are unable to come to school, you can always shop online for an even larger selection of books! The virtual Bookfair will be open from June 1st to June 26th. Just click on the following link and don’t forget to use the promo EUGENE at checkout to ensure your purchase supports Eugene Coste School.
As Owl’s Nest do not have a physical selection of Spanish titles, they were kind enough to include a link of Spanish titles families can order online. Just make sure to use the promo code provided to get the credit for the fair! The link is:

TRANSPORTATION
Yellow School Bus Registration is Now Open for 2026-27
Families can now apply for the yellow school bus service for the 2026-27 school year. To ensure service is in place for the first day of classes, registrations must be received by Sunday, June 14.
Registrations submitted after this date will be accepted; however, access to bus routes may be delayed. Of note:
Confirmed bus routes will be posted for families who registered by the late August deadline in MyCBE. The transportation fee has increased from $360 to $500/rider and from $180 to $250 for one-way kindergarten ride
For several years, CBE was able to limit fee increases by using surplus funds to help offset rising costs. These funds were generated by delaying the implementation of shorter transportation-eligibility distances by two years. However, those surplus funds are now nearly exhausted.
At the same time, transportation costs have continued to rise, driven by factors such as increased fuel prices and the need for specialized support. As a result, a fee increase is necessary to balance the budget and maintain current service levels for students.
We remain committed to supporting families. Fee waivers and supports will be available to ensure students continue to access the transportation services they need.
Families can cancel without financial impact by submitting a cancellation form by Sept. 30.

Fun Lunches
Fun lunches are offered throughout the year to students who wish to participate. We receive our lunches through Healthy Hunger, an online platform that delivers pre-ordered lunches to the school in which a portion of the proceeds goes to the school.
On the day of the event, lunches are sorted and delivered to your child’s classroom by parent volunteers. If you would like to participate, please register your child at www.healthyhunger.ca . Lunches must be ordered prior to midnight, 5 days before the fun lunch event.
We kindly ask that if your child is absent the day of the fun lunch, please contact the school prior to 10:30am, if you wish to pick it up the same day, after 1:30pm. If not specified, your food will be donated to someone in need of lunch. No refunds will be issued if your child is absent on the day of a Fun Lunch.
If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to parent support at www.healthyhunger.ca or email ecsfunlunch@gmail.com .
